McCabe Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore Ceili McCabe of the West Virginia University track and field team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week presented by University Apartments after claiming the Big 12 Conference title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
McCabe claimed the conference title on May 13 at the Big 12 Conference Outdoor Championships in Norman, Oklahoma, hosted by the University of Oklahoma.
The Vancouver, British Columbia, native completed the 3,000 meters in 10:12.79. She qualified for the race by posting a 9:45.40 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Mountaineer Showcase on April 21. McCabe also holds the program record in the event with her 9:30.69 effort in 2022.
McCabe has claimed the Big 12 3,000-meter steeplechase title for three consecutive years.
This Week in Baseball: West Virginia heads to Texas for the final series of the regular season … first pitch on Thursday, May 18, and Friday, May 19, are set for 7:30 p.m ET while Sunday, May 21, is slated to start at 3:30 p.m. ET … one win for the Mountaineers or a loss by Oklahoma State will clinch at least a share of the Big 12 title for WVU.
Last Week in Baseball: The Mountaineers had another 3-1 week, defeating Pitt in a midweek game before taking two of three from Texas Tech … against the Panthers, sophomore JJ Wetherholt went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs while redshirt-senior Caleb McNeely also hit a home run as WVU held on to win, 9-8 … on May 12 against the Red Raiders, the West Virginia bats were stifled by Texas Tech pitching in a 5-2 loss, managing just six hits on the day … the Mountaineers bounced back on May 13 with a 17-2 victory … sophomore Grant Hussey hit two home runs while junior Braden Barry notched one of his own … junior Landon Wallace added two hits and three RBIs … Blaine Traxel picked up his seventh win of the season by giving up just two runs in 8.0 innings while striking out six … on May 14,  WVU clinched the series with a 5-3 victory …  Wetherholt hit a game-tying home run in the fifth before McNeely put the Mountaineers in front in the sixth with a home run of his own … redshirt-freshman David Hagaman threw 3.2 hitless innings to pick up his first-career win while junior Carlson Reed got his seventh save with 2.0 hitless innings.
Notes: JJ Wetherholt was named the Perfect Game College Player of the Week and Big 12 Co-Player of the Week after hitting .500 (8-for-16) with two home runs, two doubles, four RBIs, three runs scored and two stolen bases … with the win on May 10 over Pitt, the Mountaineers swept the Backyard Brawl this season and have five straight in the series … WVU has now won five straight Big 12 series and have a 15-6 conference record where they sit in first place by two games with just three remaining … Hussey became the third Mountaineer to have a multi-home run game this season, joining Caleb McNeely and Landon Wallace … Wetherholt is now hitting .466 for the season, the top mark in the nation … after his 8.0 innings against the Red Raiders, Blaine Traxel continues to lead the country with 94.2 innings pitched … West Virginia moved up in all six polls and are in the top 10 in five of them, peaking at No. 6 by D1Baseball and the NCBWA … it is the highest the Mountaineers have been ranked since being No. 3 in the Collegiate Baseball News poll back on May 22, 1963.
This Week in Track and Field: West Virginia is off this week. The Mountaineers return to action at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds hosted by the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida, on May 24-27.
Last Week in Track and Field: WVU competed in the Outdoor Big 12 Championships hosted the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma … sophomore Ceili McCabe claimed the 3,000-meter steeplechase title with a time of 10:12.79 … senior Katherine Dowie also competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and earned her third consecutive All-Big 12 honor … Dowie’s classmate Rachel Butler earned her first All-Big 12 honor at her first Outdoor Big 12 Championships, completing the 10,000-meter run in 35:19.43 to finish sixth … sophomore Cassandra Williamson earned All-Big 12 honors in the 800-meter … Williamson completed the 800-meters in 2:06.87 to earn fifth … freshman Olivia Cress competed in the high jump and earned her first All-Big 12 award … Cress notched a height of 1.67 meters and secured sixth.
